  As a commonly used power supply conversion device, power adapters are configured in electronic products such as notebook computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. In order to effectively ensure the safety performance of the adapter, the power adapter usually adopts some output overload protection technology to ensure the output stability and safety while protecting the internal system of the power supply.

  The first method: ultra-power delay shutdown protection

  Over-power time-delay shutdown protection is an output overload protection technology that must be possessed in the research and development process of power adapters. In time-delay trip-type systems, short-term transient current requirements are tolerated, and the power supply is only turned off when the current stress exceeds a safe value for an extended period of time. The provision of short transient currents will not compromise the reliability of the power supply, nor will it significantly affect the cost of the power supply. Only the requirement of long-term continuous current will affect the cost and size of the circuit. When the power supply outputs a large transient current, its performance will be degraded to a certain extent, which may exceed the specified voltage error and ripple value. Typical examples of such loads that are susceptible to large and short transients are floppy disk drives and solenoid drives.

  Second method: pulse-by-pulse overpower or overcurrent limiting

  Over-power or over-current limiting on a pulse-by-pulse basis is a very effective output overload protection method in practical applications, and this technique is often used in additional secondary current limiting protection. In previous switchgear, the input current was monitored in real time. If this current exceeds the specified limit current value, the turn-on pulse is terminated. In the discontinuous flyback converter, its maximum current determines the power of the circuit, and this type of protection circuit becomes a real power limiting protection circuit. For the switching circuit of a forward converter, its input power is a function of input current and input voltage. The protection type adopted by this circuit provides a primary current-limiting protection technology, which also provides an effective detection method for power-limiting protection when the input voltage is constant. The main advantage of fast pulse-by-pulse current limiting is that it provides protection for primary-side switching devices under abnormal transient stresses such as transformer step saturation effects. Current-mode control specifies this primary pulse-by-pulse current limiting as a standard feature of the control technique, which is one of its main advantages.
